TABLE TWO -- BOULDER COUNTY
MINE NAME COMMENTS ON FEATURES
Kitchen Slope S, F: Area south of Marshall between Colorado Highways 380 and 170 has had mine fires in past and
is probably on fire today. Numerous subsidence pits ranging in size from 5' to 6' square
to 30' long by 15' wide; depth of pits ranges from 3' to 6'. Smoke or steam occasionally
observed issuing from earth. Some of bedrock and float has reddish color typical of baking.
Extent of burned-out area and of currently burning area unknown. Collapse pits, covering
an area of 8 to 12 acres, may be due in part to burning of coal left in mine.
Lewis No. 1, *: Inclined opening. Portal of incline is 6' wide and 3.5' high. Incline goes underground an
No. 2 unknown distance. Steep, sloping trough leads down to portal which lies about 8' below
surrounding surface. No access deterrent. Opening is about 100 yards west of one residence
and 200 yards northeast of another.
Reclamation scheduled for Spring 1984 -- Lining the existing ditch with a metal flume
over the mine fire area.
Marshall S, F: Area east of Marshall has had mine fire(s) for many years. Coal in back and pillars of
Nos. 1,3,4 shallow mine (10' to 100' deep) burns, causing roof to collapse which in turn gives better
air circulation to fan fire. No flames or glowing embers observed; however, smoke or steam
issuing from cracks in earth are occasionally reported. Extent of burned-out area and of
Area of about 40 acres between Cherryvale Road and Colorado 170 has abundant collapse pits
which may be at least partially due to past and present mine fires. However, mining in
Marshall area was so close to surface that subsidence pits would have formed even if there
were no mine fires.
Key to unique features symbols: Z Multiple mining zones
* Mine opening information
Reclamation and/or plans -- Table Two S Subsidence features _
lists hazard abatement work F Mine fires
+ Discrepancy between two sources D Mine drainage -33-
