PQIIJIN6 Ro MINE METHODS-.Continued,
~~
all of the.levels except the 1100, which at the present time,
is under water and not being operated.
There are no ladders, either in shaft No. 1, or No,2, but one
hoe been plaoed.on shaft No.B,,conneoting the 200 Hawkeye level
with the edit level, as per requirements under instruotians
from Inspeotor,
Ths shafts at all stations are provided with guard rails.
Pillars o3 ground are left on each side of shaft, auffiaient
to insure safety.
A winze known.a's the.-'!East:9~inze"., is located'So:. 720
E:, b00 Pt, Prom No,l shaft, and oonneota the £300 with the 1100
level, Dross cuts being also xun to same, on the 900 and 1000,
The winze is two compartment, timbered with square sets, pro-
vided with ladder road, and used for mining, ventilation and I
drainage purposes.
METHOD OF ORE ESTRACTION.
The method of ore extraction is that of over hand atoping,
Sergeant Air Drills being employed, There are 49 air drills
I
employed in the mine- two 3-1/2", and the balanoe 2-1/8"- 21
used on development, and 28 on ore. 90~ air pressure is used,
in the large stopea, from 15, to 100 Pt, in width, the 'i
~~
ore breaks into large masses, diffioult to handle, and often
nearly worthless. The expense of getting this materiel out oP
the shoots, tramming, hoisting, sorting it in the are houses,
and tramming it to the waste dumps, is greater than the coat of
breaking the ore and timbering the atopes. The obetaole to
sorting under ground, and leaving the waste in the atopes, is the
danger oP losing a portion of the fines, the moat valuable part
of the ore., Nevertheless, the prooeea oP working lower and
lower grade ores :has produced atopes of suoh width, that it has
beoome neoessary'to Pill them, as a matter of safety, and hoe '
been done by leaving the waeta under ground, To do this; it ie
neoeasary to take'preoautions to avoid the loss oP Pines. This
ie done by putting in a solid plank Ploor under the lagging, upon
whioh the oro ie blasted, and etretohing eeotione oP canvas under
the plank P].aors. Hy this means the loss of 31nes is reduoed
