Pond SS-1 collects runoff from a transfer station. The pond was dry. There was
tamarisk on the banks of this pond also.
The loadout area lies adjacent to railroad property that is not part of the permit.
Pond RR-2, which collects runoff from the loadout area -was dry. Embankments
were stable. A nearby RR-sump pond collects water from the loadout sump.
The water tank SAE was stable. This is a graveled pad around the tank.
At the west maintenance shaft, a ditch on the outslope and rock check dams were
stable with no signs of sediment transport.
The east portal access area is a reclaimed site now in its fourth growing season. The
vegetation is good. Silt fence is still present to assist in sediment control.
Rock dust hole #3 was in the process of construction. The drill rig was on site and
working. The road and pad were in good condition. The mud pit was permitted as
such.
The Halandras landfill area showed no erosion. This solid waste disposal site consists
of several trenches containing mostly construction debris. The landfill is permitted
and included on maps of the site.
Return Shaft 3 (RS-3) is permitted as an SAE. It consists of a bermed, graveled pad.
There was no erosion or instability. A pile of fill beside the shaft will be used to refill the
shaft.
Degas pad LW-76-2 has not been used yet is the site of a degas well that has not yet
been used. The mud pit was drying, but still present. Topsoil was windrowed along
the pad. The drilling had been recently completed and the pad is scheduled for
immediate reclamation, leaving only the degas well itself.
The pads and shafts of return shafts 1 and 2 (RS-1 and 2) have been reclaimed.
Standpipes remain sticking out of both pads. Revegetation was coming along,
although cheatgrass is a major problem across the mine site. In undisturbed areas,
cheatgrass is the primary species. The operator is discussing the use of some
innovative techniques to keep cheatgrass off newly reclaimed areas.
A reclaimed exploration site was visited. The reclamation was good, but cheatgrass
predominated the vegetation.
Degas hole LW-10-4 was reclaimed with good revegetation, including western,
intermediate and crested wheatgrass, with some Russian wild rye and sagebrush.
