COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE ~~~, ~ '~U X06
C'~a/a a~-o~ c~~
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations
made during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during
the inspection and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
Hvdroloaic Balance (continued):
what I observed in the field. Although 1 did not visit all of the well sites, I observed that wells 79-
36, AH-1, AI-2 and AN-1 (all shallow alluvial wells) had been sealed and that wells 79-b1 and X-
4 (both deep wells) had not been sealed. According to Dennis they were using one of the
three methods agreed upon by the Division, BLM and KCC. They were either pulling the
casing and filling the well, fracturing the casing and filling the casing and annulus or drilling
out the casing and filling the well. They were also calculating the volume of cement required
to fill each hole to help ensure proper sealing. The contractor appeared to be causing very
minimal disturbance to the surrounding areas and he indicated that he would go back and
reseed the areas when he was finished. There were several fairly large piles of debris (old
casing, cement bags, old tires, etc.) that will need to be cleaned up if they are not removed
by the contractor (although he indicated that he would remove it). Finally, he stated that,
barring any unforeseen problems, all of the wells would be sealed by the deadline of 12
October 2002.
Fish and Wildlife: There was no wildlife observed on the site at the time of the
inspection.
Reveaetation/Reclamation Success: The entire mine site has been revegetated. The
vegetative cover looked good. Many of the grasses appeared to be dead or
dormant, though, due to the very dry conditions of the area. The mine was used for
grazing early in the summer. There did not appear to be any ill effects from the
grazing at the time of the inspection. The vegetation at the loadout also appeared
to be dead or dormant. KCC needs to monitor the revegetation of the recently
reclaimed exploration holes to ensure that no problems arise.
