I am writing this letter to present additional information concerning this water
and to ask other questions that came out of a calversation that I had with the landowner
and Reclamation Permit holder for this site Mr. Robert Corey of Montrose, CO.
I discussed the current situation concerning groundwater with Mr. Corey. Mr. Corey
explained to me that in the past, a number of springs in the vicinity of the Corey Pit were
present and producing water. The springs are located near the permit site and along the
east and west sides of Mexican Gulch. Sufficient water was produced from these springs
that the Menoken Water Company of Montrose, CO developed some of them as water
sources. The small concrete block building located to the north of the Corey Pit is
actually the collection point and treatment plant of the Menoken Water Company. The
Menoken Water Company has developed other water sources over the past 40 years since
that treatment plant was put into service and is no longer interested in the springs in this
area a., .. a: titer ;cure= for their company.
During our conversation Mr. Corey wanted to know if United Companies would install a
pipe to transport the water at the pit floor to the natural outlet point in the draw located to
the west of the Corey Pit. His opinion is that transporting [his water in a pipe will reduce
the amount of sediment carried with the water and maintain higher quality. He also stated
that installing a pipe to transport water to the surface tlas the saute effect as a naturally
occurring spring, bringing the water to the ground surface. In Mr. Corey's opinion, the
mining activity at this site may have moved the discharge point of this water but it has
not affected the volume of water that is coming to the surface of the ground.
®~4SI~
Q~~~ ~®~Y
