This was a partial inspection conducted July 13 by Jim Burnell of CDMG. The inspection was
unaccompanied. The mine site was deserted and quiet, except for a truck that amved the
afternoon of the 13`~ (possibly to spray weeds). The mine site was extremely dry. The weather
was warm and dry with a brief afremoon rain shower.
Siens & Markers: All signs and mazkers noted were correct and properly placed. No signs were
noted in the north azea, north of Pond G.
Roads: The main access road was in excellent condition, albeit very dusty.
Hydrologic Balance: The rock check dams in the PD-4 drainage below the twin culverts have
had some effect on the erosion of the drainage channel below the culverts.
Pond D contained water but was not discharging. The culvert above Pond D was clear. Pond C
was dry. Ponds A and B were very low. Pond E was not discharging, although it contained
some water.
Explosives: The old explosives magazine azea has been removed and reclaimed.
Support Facilities: Facilities area was quiet, neat, and orderly (except for weeds -see below).
The above-ground diesel tank was secure, with the berm solid and liner in place.
Topsoil: There was a lot of erosion on the reclaimed slope below the road at drainage PD-4.
Mostly it is wind erosion, but there is some more gully development also. Some straw mulch
had been laid in strips covering maybe 10% of the ground surface. The straw mulch was laid
above the road also.
The reclaimed slope south of the facilities area has experienced some erosion from runoff from
the yazd. The east perimeter was okay, all along the fence. Erosion control measures on the
1986 reclaimed area don't appear to be sufficient. Recommend additional straw bales
strategically placed and even rip rap as an energy dissipator.
Reve etg ation: Lots of blue flax blooming, mostly on the east side of the pit, where revegetation
appears much better than the west side. West side has got a lot of bare ground.
In the reclaimed area below the road at PD-4 drainage, there are lots of young sagebrush
starting.
WEEDS: A [ruck went by on the access road on Thursday, 13 July, with a tank in the bed,
which may have been there to spray weeds.
Lazge amounts of young thistle by the roadside of [he access road and all across the yazd at the
facilities azea. At the south end of the warehouse, some older, larger thistle appeaz to have been
sprayed, but all the young plants were unaffected.
The drainage above Pond D was infested with thistle throughout, concentrated in the ditch
bottoms. The PD-4 drainaghe contained a lot of thistle, especially at the top and around the
north end.
