The explosives bunkers located in Elk Creek were checked. They were locked and found to be in
compliance.
Revegetation
The drill road and pads in C Gulch were seeded by the end of August. Germination is very good
over most of the area. The coconut and straw matting used to cover a majority of the reclaimed area
is working very well to control erosion and to enhance the seed establishment. It was noted that
where the matting was not used along a narrow strip on the outside of the disturbance, seed
germination was poor.
A copy of the seed tag was provided. OMI is seeding the species approved in the permitted seed
mix. The rate of planting was higher than approved, but Mr. Milner said the rodents were eating
quite a bit of seed and he wanted to be sure to get a good stand. He hopes the matting will help
reduce the amount of seed that the rodents get!
Heavy grazing is apparent at the reclaimed Bear Creek facilities. Several patches of thistle were
observed in this area and should be sprayed this fall.
Development Waste
OMI is no longer depositing waste on the East Yard Pile. It has been compacted and is ready for
topsoil placement. OMI is planning to use salvaged topsoil from the Elk Creek mine facilities
development to cover the pile. If construction does not start soon, an alternate plan may be
necessary.
Waste is now being placed in the West Valley fill. In the first lift, OMI placed a layer of geotextile
every four feet. The first lift is complete and OMI is currently placing waste in the 2"d phase of the
2nd lift. Waste is being placed in 6 inch lifts, rolled and compacted as the pile is constructed. Results
from the compaction testing shows that nearly 100% compaction is being achieved. The first bench
has been covered with at least four feet of material and it will be seeded this fall.
Waste from the temporary waste pile in the East Yard is being trucked to the West Valley fill. The
temporary pile is nearly depleted.
