The site is located approximately a miles northeast of
Kiowa, Colorado. The pit is situated on and between two small knolls with the east permit
boundary actually cutting through the larger knoll. The western most knoll has basically
been mined out at this point.
There was mine identification sign posted at the entrance to the mine site which contained
the required information. The permit boundaries were delineated by t-posts at the corners.
Most of the mined area has been regraded and is ready for topsoiling and seeding. There is
a stockpile of manure and straw on site that will be mixed with existing overburden and used
as a topsoil substitute since the area is lacking in topsoil. Prior to seeding the permanent
vegetation seed mix, the operator will need to develop and implement a noxious weed control
plan to deal with an infestation of Diffuse Knapweed (Centaurea diffusa). Observations of the
surrounding undisturbed area revealed that this weed is primarily associated with the
disturbed area of the mine site. The infestation is at a manageable level at this point, but
could easily spread out over the entire site once it is reclaimed, and more importantly, the
reclaimed site could become a source of contamination for the surrounding undisturbed and
presently uninfected area. As a result, this is being cited as a problem on page three of
this report along with appropriate corrective actions. This will include submitting a
technical revision which incorporates a noxious weed control plan into the permit
application. The details of what should be included in the plan are on page three of this
report. The current financial warranty for this site is $67,250.00 which is adequate to
reclaim this site at this time.
CERTIFIED MAIL NO. ~~ 53~ C~ g~
RETURN RECEIPT REQUESTEQ
I & E Contact Address cc: Jim Stevens
^ CE
NAME Wayne Spence ^ BL
OPERATOR Denver Brick Company ^ FS
STREET P.O. 1600 ^ HW
CITY/STATE/2IP Castle Rock, CO 80104 ^ HMWNID (CH)
^ SE
^ WQCD (CH)
^ OTHER
