III. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
Channel PM-12 has been reconstructed as a riprap channel as opposed to a vegetated channel.
SCC has done a good job at reconstructing this channel. Repair and reconstruction work has also
been completed at PM-11, PM-14, and PM-22. PM-9, PM-15, and PM-17 will require
placement of gravel or revision to the design specifications. A pile of riprap has been placed in
PM-4 just below Stock Pond T26. Please properly place the riprap in the PM-4 channel at this
location according to the design specifications. Work also remains to be completed at PM-3 and
PM-18 to attain the designed configurations. Please take steps necessary to complete proper
construction of these post mine channels.
Rills have formed again above T28 and along the Permanent Road crossing in the vicinity of
PM-4. This was the site of NOV CV-2003-005. Appazently this area has not stabilized since
the abatement steps were implemented last summer. Please implement additional mitigation
measures at this location, which may include a water baz or other diversion above the PM-4
culvert and re-grade the ditch along the Permanent Road.
Fish & Wildlife
A pair of Sandhill Cranes and two young cranes were spotted at the top of the drainage inlet to
Pond 004. The female bird and her young proceeded azound Pond 004 and hid in the brush,
while the male took off in the opposite direction across the Permanent Road.
Reve eg ration
Houndstongue appeazed to be prevalent at the mine site. It was spotted in many locations across
the mine. Thistle and houndstongue were identified along several post mine drainage channels
and on pond embankments. Please control the growth of troublesome weeds by spraying or other
means throughout the mine site.
