Ill. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
As a result of this inspection, the DMG will modify the abatement steps for NOV CV-2001-002
to include a provision for burial and compaction of the larger rocks and aspen trees at the base of
the slide area. An excavation has been dug at the base of the slide. After placement of the large
rocks and aspen trees, SCC will compact the area to the extent possible. Topsoil will be replaced
over the entire slope and the site will be reseeded. The temporary access road established above
Pond 015 to the base of the slide azea will also be reseeded and reclaimed. Please refer to the
Modification Notice For Notice Of Violation attached to this inspection report.
Work has begun for the abatement of NOV CV -2001-012. A buffer zone is being established
between disturbed and undisturbed ground along the eastern perimeter of the South Area pit.
Slides and Damage
A slide has developed at Pond 016. A semi-circulaz crack and associated slumping have
occurred on the side slopes of the pond on the inlet side. The crack extends to the north side of
[he pond cut slope, across the light use road that accesses this pond. The crack is approximately
250 feet long and as much as three feet deep near the inlet of the pond. A spring emanates from
the slumped azea on the south side of the inlet. No material from the slide has entered Pond 016
and there were no visible impacts to [he pond at the time of this inspection.
Please monitor this location and take steps necessary to repair the slide. The seep/spring on the
south side of the inlet may be the underlying cause of the slide. Please consider installing an
underdrain at this location to prevent further saturation of the cut slope, and inform the DMG if
further movement or damage occurs at this location.
Revegetation
Growth of Houndstongue was prevalent in several azeas at the mine site. Particularly on the
embankments of Ponds 006, 009, and 015. Please initiate weed control at these locations.
