3 <br />DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTY NEED CONTROL AREA <br />The weed control area encompasses all of Montezuma County, and is comprised <br />of 1,340,160 total acres or 2094 square miles. The County consists of 69.6% Federal <br />land, .9% State land, 1.8% County and Municipal land, with 27.7% of the land in private <br />ownership. There are 1070 miles of state and county roads. 820 of these miles are county <br />maintained roads. There are some Federal and Tribal roads not included in this total. <br />Tl~e County includes areas of high acid desert, sagebrush rangelands, grazeable <br />woodlands, irrigated pasture and hayland and large areas of dry and irrigated farmlands. <br />Overall elevation within the County ranges from approximately 4,900 feet to over 11,600 <br />feet. Average annual precipitation ranges from approximately 13.5 inches at Cortez to <br />over 28 inches near timberline. The growing season averages approximately 125 days in <br />the agricultural areas, normally extending from h9ay through September with moderately <br />cold winters. <br />STATEIVIENT OF NEED PROBLEI\I <br />The weed problem within the County is considered significant. The following list <br />of seventeen (I7) weeds designated as noxious in Montezuma County and the level of <br />infestation is listed as follows: <br />1. Leafy Spurge - Eupltorbia esula loin <br />2. DilTuse Knapweed - Centaurea diffusa lo~v <br />3. Russian Knapweed -Centaurea repens very high <br />4. Spotted Knapweed -Centaurea maculosa loiv <br />The following weeds were added to the 1\Iontezuma County Noxious weed list by <br />action of the County Commissioners at a public hearing held on March 28, 1994, <br />and the weed plan is hereby modified to include those changes. <br />5. Houndstongue - Cynoglossum officinale lorv <br />The Montezuma County 1Veed Commission targets the above list of noxious <br />weeds mandated for control within the County: The Weed Commission shall review the <br />control levels of the Mandated Noxious 1Veeds iltat are being achieved, and will make <br />recommendations as appropriate. <br />The 1Veed Commission strongly recommends that all landowners cooperate in <br />managing these noxious weeds with the goal of greatly reducing the infestation and <br />impact of these weed pest in 1`lontezuma County. <br />
