Ms. Campbell Bell 2 December 5, 1997
Stone Gravel Pit Permit No. M-97-089
posted by BLM, may have been previously removed by BLM personnel.
It is possible that additional markers exist in the SW quadrant of the proposed permit area
than were placed by BLM. Additionally, survey ribbons may have been removed by
livestock and/or wildlife, adding to the uncertainty of the area(s) previously delineated by
survey ribbon.
Apparently, BLM had delineated specific area(s- with survey ribbon and pin flagging
(possibly removed). BLM had supervised the excavations referenced in DMG 11/21/97
inspection report. Please direct inquiries regarding the proximity of the excavations to
the specific area(s) delineated by BLM, to the BLM.
Inquiry: /have walked this /and many times and /have found more than five test
trenches. The trenches /have located are approximate/y ten (10/ feet long
and three (3) feet wide. Some of these trenches had been left open and they
measured nine (9/ feet deep. /have photographs of the open trenches that /
wou/d be happy to share with you. They were fi/led in aher /notified BLM
that /had discovered open trenches. You a/so made no mention of the fact
that a blade had been dropped and quite a few new roads had been made in
a random fashion... Can /assume that you did not wa/k a large portion of the
permit area since there is no mention of the larger trenches and the roads
that have been cut?
DMG inspection included much of the proposed permit area and surrounding areas.
Observations made by DMG, during the inspection, are recorded in the referenced
inspection report. The proposed permit area encompasses approximately 158 acres of
rolling sage brush lands. Additional disturbances may exist, but were not observed by the
DMG inspector.
Thank you for offering photographic evidence of disturbances, not observed by DMG.
Please note that photographic evidence must be dated and show sufficient detail to
identify the location and nature of the activity.
Comment: A/so, one of these roads ran across the top of the cultural site and its
midden.
Please note that in these proceedings DMG authority is limited to enforcement of the
Colorado Land Reclamation Act for the Extraction of Construction Materials, Section 34-
32.5-101 et seq., C.R.S., and the Construction Material Rules and Regulations of the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board.
