Long <br />Dl.~isian Dheaor <br />DMG has received your written response to DMG report resulting from the 1 1 /21 /97 <br />inspection of the proposed Stone Gravel Pit. The purpose of this letter is to respond to <br />the inquiries and comments presented in your 12/4/97 correspondence. <br />Inquiries and comments from Ms. Campbell Bell are represented by bold, italicized print. <br />DMG response provided in subsequent paragraphls). <br />Inquiry: You state that 'give recent excavations were observed within or near the <br />surveyed area. " / am assuming that you are referring to the area that has <br />been f/agged to indicate the location of the cultural sites. Am /correct in this <br />assumption? <br />DMG inspector observed pottery fragments within the area of survey ribbons and pin <br />flagging. However, survey ribbons were apparently placed by BLM, and not by DMG. <br />Please direct inquiries regarding the purpose of the flagging to BLM. <br />Inquiry: You a/so state that 'evidence suggests that rubber tired backhoe was utilized <br />for the excavation. Excavation trenches appeared to have been <br />approximate/y 18" wide and 3' long. " Are you stating that these, or some of <br />these excavation trenches are within the f/agged area? <br />Survey ribbons and pin flagging observed by DMG on 1 1 /21 /97, did not appear to clearly <br />delineate a specific area. Therefore, uncertainty exists regarding the proximity of the <br />excavations and area(s) delineated by survey ribbon and pin flagging. Pin flagging was <br />observed in the area of the excavations.
