The site is
.ocated just west of Canon City appro:<imately one mile west of Skyline Dr ire.
'he site was inspec[ed in March of 1998 and two problems were identified along with
:o rrective actions. As of this inspection, neither of the problems have been corrected and
~s a result, they arz both being cited as possible violations along with the necessary
-o rrective actions. "Reason to believe" letters are also being sent out which will identify
~.imes for the neat available Board Meeting and the possible fine schedule.
.'he first citation is for failure co post a mine identification sign ac the mine entrance and
-allure to clearly mark the affected area boundaries. The mine is situated in an area with
extensive pre-law mining disturbance. Therefore, it is essential that the boundaries be
parked so that these disturbances can be properly cracked. In addition, the Canon City
administrator has expressed some conczrn about the west boundary in parercular, as they own
:he property that abuts vp to the mine on the west. Apparently the city is concerned that
lining has encroached onto their property, however, until the property boundaries are clearly
narked it will not be possible to determine this. Observations made during this inspection
could seem to indicate that the area along the property boundary has not been mined, however,
.he area may have been affected by mining in that settling and slumping has occurred in the
7eneral vicinity of the property boundary. This appears to have occurred some time ago and
lay have been the result of pre-law mining activities. As stated previously, until the
~`_Eected area boundary is clearly marked, it is not possible to determine exactly where this
sturbed area lies.
.z second ~~_tation is for failure to properly handle or dispose of potentially hazardous
aterial. ,pecifically, there is a large petroleum type storage tank that has leaked a
+ortion of ._s contents out onto the ground. The operator needs to positively identify this
substance and clean up and properly dispose of the spilled material. Both of these items are
;iited on page three of this report along with appropriate corrective actions and dates.
)-.ce the affected area boundary is clearly marked, the Division will conduct another
.:spection to determine whether mining has caused off site damage and if so, was it pre-law
>r the result of more recent mining activity.
CERTIFIED MA1L NO. ~S~ ~ ~~
RETURN RECEIPT REGIUESTED
& E Contact Address cc: Jim Stevens
Steven Rabe-City of Canon City
^ CE
iAME Ca m/on Dolomite Ouarrv ^ BL
1PERATOR Gary W.
