INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 2
FILE N0. M-77-526
DATE: April 29, 1986

OBSERVATIONS OF IMPORTANCE:
1. Inspector was accompanied by Al Frei, Steve O'Brian and the site foreman.
2. Sloping at the southeast lake area will require 3H:1V grade prior to
final release.
3. Good stores of topsoil are located at north end of the main pit.
4. Asphalt is being used to fill the southwest lake area.
5. Operator has established small trees at various locations around the pit
area.
6. The northwest pit area is separated from the South Platte River by a
minimal (30-40 foot) setback. Most other setback areas are eroding
along the river bank.
RECOMMENDATIONS: I
1. Future mining should maintain a minimum 150 foot setback from the
river. A 100 foot setback was clearly specified in the 1981 Techincal
Revision.
2. The operator should consider filling the lake side of the setback at the
more narrow locations.
3. Only clean rip-rap (no-rebar) should be used along the South Platte and
only if approved by the appropriate federal regulatory agencies.
4. ~ Remove all asphalt and rebar materials from along the river.
5. The operator should lessen the bank gradient along the South Platte
fiver to achieve a shallower shoreline gradient. This will enhance the
chances for revegetation and bank stabilization. Preferably, banks
should not exceed 3H:1V or 2H:1V. The following seed species may work
well:
~65, PLS
-Tall fescue ~~
-Switchgrass -2.7
-Western wheatgrass 9.6 (Broadcast rate)
Slopes must be reduced prior to seeding.
