The state Mined Land <br />F..eclamatlon Division was notified about my schedule and was able to <br />participate In a joint inspection. <br />~~eneral Comments <br />There was no one e.t trio mine or the mine office representing the <br />cr_,mpany as we cr_,nducted the inspection. The r_empany maintains a set <br />of mine plan files and manltorinq rec~~rds in the Uft1rE'..n the mine <br />but we did not review them bey=aLtse there was n~~ one there. As we <br />discussed the mine and our inspe~_tion, the state in5pectnr said that ~ <br />it was his understanding that the company is beginning t~~ bac4;fi11 <br />the pit beraLtse they have nc~t been able +.~~ find a cr_~ntract for their '~.;,~~ <br />cr_,al. The mine has been temporarily inactive since Aecember ~_f 1985, 5 <br />with a skeleton crew maintaining the areas environmental strLtctLtres,i <br />prier tc. that, the ~=ompany only made a few rLtts expr_~sinq the main <br />seam of r_nal and some r_~f the riders. Some of the coal was brought out <br />r,f the pit and was crushed and sized un the site. A permanent out of <br />pit spc,il dump was built and an oLtt c.f pit sodic overbLrden pile was <br />set aside for selective placement during backfilling and grading. <br />The sediment control system, which ~_onsists ~_~f sediment ponds; <br />A,b,C. and H; berms and a series of dikes were installed prior to <br />temporary cessation. <br />The north pond area has been backfilled appro.v,imately within 30 <br />feet of the original contour. Spell has also been end dLtmped over <br />the highwall on the southwest end of the pit. The sodic e~ut.nf pit <br />overburden pile on the south side of the mine has been hauled ba~.F; <br />into the pit. It was not obvir_,Lts to me, as to where it was placed in <br />the areas that Nave been bay=l::filled, the location sh~~uld be verified <br />because there are permit stipulations for special handling techniques <br />far the backfilling of this material. <br />Pond "C" was dry.
