This slope also allows for an overall pile face slope of 3:1 by constructing 50 foot lifts at 2.6:1
with 20 foot horiziontal benches.
The sloping plots were instrmented with neutron probe access tubes and buried TDR probes
to measure moisture, thermocouples to measure soil temperature, runoff collection gutters, and with
shallow percolate collection at the interface between the soil and the combusted shale. These
collection systems allowed quantification of runoff quantity and quality on the various aspects of the
prototype pile, (north facing, east facing, and south facing), with various surface treatments (A
~~ F)
LACHEL FELICE & Associates
