~~
January 25, 2000
iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
~~~~~
JAN 2 6 2000
Steve Shuey
Colorado Division of Minerals & Geology
Durango Field Office
701 Camino Del Rio, Room 125
Durango, CO E;1301
RE: FOREST LAKES GRAVEL I'IT
PERMIT # M-1981-158
Dear Mr. Shuey:
Durango Field Offce
Divlabn of Minerals b Geology
FOREST LAKES
METROPOLITAN
DISTRICT
rLl; ~._,~~ ~ ~ ~~ COPY
r=.1_ M-~ j - I
srr~: fo:~S~ i~~~ ~E~,
-.~..L
This letter is in response to your December 17, 1999 inspection report. The District intends to address the
issues in your report by filing for a release of pit #1 (3.01) acres and request a technical revision to the
permit to moves this acreage to and/or increase pit #2 not to exceed 9.99 acres. To accomplish this, the
District has filed, under separate correspondence with the Division a report and request for release of pit #1.
Further the District has contacted Westem Land Surveyors to develop the additional information (proposed
boundary and acreage) for the Division to make a decision on the technical revision request.
Concerning items 1 and 2, we have correspondence that indicates the Division required item one to be
performed by the owner/operator in 1984 which was not installed prior to our succession as operator in
1992. Without the installation of item one (the permit boundary), determination of item two is somewhat
difficult. I haves confirmed with V'lestem Land Surveyors that the work they performed in 1984 was not a
pinned survey ;and therefore bour~dary markers were not provided.
Item 3 of your inspection report amcerning the fill material placed for reduction of the high wall. The District
hauls excavated materials from various projects to the pit, which is not used for fill. This material is mixed
with the gravel material in the pit Ind ran through the contract rock crusher at that time.
We have included copies of our correspondence with Western Land Surveyors for your reference. Please
note that sincE~ your inspection we have received well over 8" of snow in the area, which makes it
inaccessible and difficult to locate reference points as well as determine the affected area at this time.
Further note that Western's backlog will not permit them to perform the work until March which is normally
dry enough to qet back into this area. We selected Westem Land Surveyors since they have been involved
with the prior owner/operator of the pit and would prefer to remain with them. However, before we commit
to their proposal we would like confirmation from the Division that this time frame is acceptable, please
advise at your e~ariiest convenience.
If you have any
Sincerely,
Dale Kortz,
FLMD BOe,tl MOVem,rs
FlLE
and/or require additional information, please feel free to contact me.
P.O.
