-- gravel pit
3. A soil teat should be performed to determine the proper fertilizer
requirement. In lieu of a soil teat, fertilize the entire gravel pit with
40 pounds per acre each of available elemental nitrogen (N) and phosphoric
acid (P20SS). The fertilizer moat be incorporated into the top 2 or 3 inches
of soil using a disk or harrow implement.
4. Fitm the seedbed with a packer so
left in the soil after walking across
is recommended:
SPecles Variety
western vheatgrass Arriba
sideoats grams Vaughn or Niner
alkali sacaton
sand dropseed
yellow aweetclover
that a one-half inch boot imprint is
the ground. The following seed mix
Mix Percentage
30
30
20
10
10
Drilled Seed Rate
(~La*/Ac)
2.7
.3
.1
.7
*seeding rates are given in pounds of Pure Live Seed (PLS).
PLS ~ purity x germination
5. Seeding should be done using a grass drill. The drill should be equipped
with a satisfactory seeding mechanism, agitator, double disk furrow openers,
and packer wheels or drag chains. The distance between drill rows should
not exceed 12 inches. Broadcasting the seed can be done in areas which are
inacesaible for drilling. If the seed is broadcasted, then the above seed-
ing rate should be doubled. The broadcasted seeds should be uniformly
distributed over the ground surface, and mixed into the soil with a harrow
or by hand ranking. Planting can be done any time between November L and
April 30. Seeding should not be done when the soil is frozen. The seeds
should be planted between ~ and 3/4 of an inch deep.
6. Mulch should be applied to the reseeded area to help moderate soil temp-
eratures, and improve soil moisture absoption and holding capacity. Grass
hay or cereal grain straw would work well. Apply 4000 lbs./Ac (90 lbs./
1000 sq, ft.) of mulch (dry weight) uniformly over the ground surface. At
least half of the material should be 10 inches or more in length. Do not
use fine materials. The mulch should not be moldy or of otherwise low
quality. In addition, the mulch should be free of weeds. The mulch should
be anchored either with commerical netting products (on slopes steeper
than 3:1 ) or mechanically. The latter can be accomplished using a heavy
disk implement, with dull blades, to punch the mulch into the soil 2 to
3 inches deep.
7. All tillage, seeding, and crimping operations should be performed
across the elope when practical.
8. New seedlings should be protected until the stand is well developed.
During seedling establishment, weeds may be controlled by mowing or by using
an approved herbicide.
~<::
