~~
E
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE 1919 Highway 50 West Pueblo, CO 81008 .
RECEIb'ED Jl1L 1 2 1985

July 5, 1985
Mr. James H. Kirkland
RBR Conatructian
P.0. Box 354
Rye, CO 81069
Dear Mr. Kirkland
This is in reference to the field investigation done an June 27, 1985 on a
proposed gravel pit located in SE 1/4 SE 1/4 s. 36 T20S R 64 W and in
NE 1/4 NE 1/4 s. 1 T 215 R 64 W. The following information may be used by
your company to fulfill the requirements of the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board.
The proposed gravel pit has been located on the attached aerial photo copy
and soil survey map. The major soil is a Glenberg-Haverson fine sandy loam
(Gh). A soil description, along with engineering properties, are attached.
The site has had moat of the tree cover removed. Scattered trees of
cottonwood, Russian olive, and willow are present with their predominance
increasing toward the Arkansas River. The herbaceous layer is dominated by
kochia and inland saltgrass. Scattered patches of western wheatgrass,
galleta, and alkali sacaton can be found thoughout the area. A list of
the existing vegetation is attached. Specific vegetative cover estimates
are on the attached CO-ECS-2.

Based upon the Bite visit, your representative indicated that mining would
concentrate in the northwest corner of the permit area. The tree cover in
this area is OZ. The poet-mining land use is proposed as rangeland. You
should be aware that the water table may be encountered within several
feet from the surface. The reclamation plan is written far returning the
land to rangeland and does not address leaving the area as a pond. The
Soil Conservation Service recommends the following steps to stabilize
the site after mining:
1. Allow several h undrad feet of buffer area between any mining opera-
tioas and the canal within the site or the Arkansas River.
>:.
2. The top 6 inches of topsoil should be stockpiled prior to mining.
After mining is completed, the excavated area shall be graded to leave
slopes no steeper than 3:1. The land should be scarified 6 inches deep
following grading to provide better cohesion between topsoil and sub-
strate. The topsoil should be reapread across the area uniformly and
smoothly.
O
