No erosional problems
were noted on this road.
Hydrologic Balance: -The wash bay pond (not a NPDES discharge point) contained
water approximately three feet below the top of the embankment and was not
discharging. This is a total containment pond and discharge into the Work Area Pond
triggers BTEX testing (in addition to regular NPDES testing). The operator and the
contractors use this pond for water for their water trucks. The pond embankment was
well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. No
erosional problems were noted on the pond embankment at the time of the
inspection.
-The work area pond (NPDES 002A) contained water approximately one foot below
the top of the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection.
The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time
of the inspection. No erosional problems were noted on the embankment at the
time of the inspection. There were numerous cow elk below the pond embankment.
-The Gossard Pond (NPDES 003A) contained water approximately three feet below
the riser pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection. The emergency spillway is a 12" culvert. There is sediment in the pond
that will need to be cleaned out this summer to maintain proper pond capacity.
Tony Tennyson indicated that the pond would be cleaned sometime this fall.
-The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) contained a small amount of water (to the bottom
of the riser pipe at the bottom of the pond) at the time of the inspection. The
presettling sump at the inlet of the pond also contained a small amount of water.
The pond embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time
of the inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of
the inspection. The emergency spillway is an open, trapezoidal riprapped channel.
The spillway was stable and well maintained at the time of the inspection.
-The Rail Loop Pond (NPDES OObA) contained water approximately two feet below
the gated pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and appeared to be stable at the time of the
inspection. No erosional problems noted on the embankment at the time of the
inspection.
-The Stoker Siding Pond (NPDES 005A) was not inspected.
- All of the roadside ditches appeared to be stable and in good condition. The
Colowyo Mine has received large amounts of rain in the past few weeks and
everything appears to be holding up well. There were no erosional problems noted
in any of the ditches at the time of the inspection.
