There is no buffering strip of bottomland be low the terrace to be mined here.
The operator's present method of operation, and the future one described in the application
appear to be adequate to protect the areas downhill (land or river) from sloughing,
sedimentation, uncontrolled runoff, etc.
There are two residences beyond the eastern end of the amended area. These will not receive
any impact from the pit, except perhaps dust from an occasional gust. There will be an
irrigated crop field to remain between the houses and the pit rim. No stockpiling will occur
outside or above the pit limits during the life of this mine.
The expansion toward the south will approach the existing windbreak of cottonwood trees.
There will be no activity planned near this limit, except for the placement of a berm along
one adjacent landowner's property. There are also earthen ditches and fencelines along the
southern teee line.
The western limit of the amended area includes another "wild" area in a natural gully, which
mining activity will avoid. To reach the western-most tip of the new area, a shallow dip is
crossed, through which agricultural tail water drains from the off-permit fields. No mining
has disturbed this area. There is, however, a small patch of Russian knapweed (ACroptilon
repens) present there. This is a State-listed noxious weed, whose treatment should not be
neglected. It is within or near the area to be disturbed by mining and mine traffic, and the
infestation could worsen. It is not regarded presently as a problem, but the
operator/landowner should be aware of this and its potential spread. It is recommended that
the county weed authority be contacted for control information. The weed inspector is Ms.
Jude Sirota, 970/255-0795.
This western tip of the amended area is a finger ridge, only part of which is being included
in the permit. The adjoining landowners (the Griffiths) will concurrently mine "their side"
for use on their own land, while the operator mines the permitted side. This must be
coordinated to ensure stability.
The amendment application was discussed during and after the inspection. There were no
problems noted during this pre-operation inspection.
For all questions or comments pertaining to this report, please contact this inspector at the
address or phone shown below:
Division of Minerals and Geology
484 Turner, Bldg.
