Jim Burnell visited the discharge point in
question with Mazk Milner of the OMI staff. When they arrived, the water discharging from the
pipe was clear. There was a faint odor of sulfur in the air. Samples were taken of the water and
submitted for analysis. This dischazge point was visited at two other occasions during that week
and the black-colored water described by the caller was not witnessed.
Topsoil: The topsoil pile near the mouth of Elk Creek canyon is ready for seeding. This pile
will be moved in a year because the new conveyer will go right over top of its present location.
The topsoil pile above the substation 3 pond was. in good condition. It had been recently
reseeded where the topsoil was removed during the MSHA fire-fighting episode.
Revegetation: There was thistle around the mine water pond. This should be sprayed in the
spring. The revegetation at the Bear Creek site was not real good. The Operator indicated that
the periodic presence of sheep moving through the area prevented the good growth here seen
elsewhere. The old portal azea in Bear Creek look fair, but not great revegetation there, either.
The revegetation a~ the Hubbazd Creek fan and portal site was very good. Forb growth
especially was impressive, with abundant healthy yarrow standing. out in September.
Facilities: No problems were noted with any of the facilities.
Air Resource Protection: There'was no dust evident during the inspection.
a
Slides & Damaee: The old slide near the future Elk Creek mine portals appears to have been
stable for a good while.
Reclamation Success: The reclamation at the staging azea and pond is very good, probably as a
result of the wet summer.
Records: All of the records were checked and found to be in compliance. Please refer to the
attached records checklist.
c: \m s97\san born\insp0999
