General Comments
This was a complete oversight inspection. The Mined Land P,eclamation
Division was notified about my schedule for this inspection and was
able to .join me but their inspection was a partial.
This mine has been closed. Exhaust fans have been pulled, the
portals have been sealed and backfilled. Mining and electrir_al
equipment have been pulled out of the underground workings as they
retreated. Provisions have not been made to blocl; portions of the
mine to facilitate re-entry efforts should the need arise. Haulage
through the main entries at Somerset is prohibitive because of the
long haul, per Mr. Pecharich, so to reenter, another mining operation
would have to go in further up, in one of the side canyons, instead
of at the Somerset workings.
The status of demolition and cleanup is pending, the outcome of
Kaiser Coals bankruptr_y proceedings. P,ecent work. on the surface has
been limited to the pulling out of two gas wells on the ridge between
Hubbard and Bear Creek.
On the Hubbard Creek Substation #1, the exhaust fan was removed
and both portals were sealed and backfilled. The old water tank for
the early 74's mine fire was pulled out of the area and is stored on
the pads near the main entries. The only thing that remains to 6e
done. in this area, is the removal of the concrete pads for the fan
and substation. These are to be dozed out and the area is to be
backfilled. There is same thought to using the pr elaw development
waste stored in the area for backfill material but the necessary
aoorovals have not been attainoA.
