Pa e 2
MINE ID # OR M-1996-064 INSPECTION DATE: 6I19I200 INSPECTOR'S cmr
PROSPECTING ID #: INITIALS:
OBSERVATIONS
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring and enforcement inspection process that the
Division of Minerals and Geology (Division) carries out on all permitted mines in Colorado at least once every
four years. Chris Rowe from the Division carried out the inspection; also present was Mr. Albert Templeton The
Denver Brick (Operator) representative. The 40-acre site is located off Crowfoot Valley Road 4.5 mites
northeast of Castle Rock.
Of the 40 permitted acres only 23 can be disturbed, and of the 23 acres only 10 acres can be disturbed without
reclamation commencing. Approximately 8-10 acres has been disturbed to date, with reclamation beginning on
the northeast comer of phase 1. The $87,986 bond should be sufficient to reclaim the approximate 10 acres of
disturbance. Mining is currently occurring in phase 1 and 2 of the site. Phase 3 has not been mined yet. There
is a stormwater detention pond on site that collects runoff from the disturbed areas.
According the Mr. Templeton The Denver Brick Company is planning on purchasing the mine site. As a result
the owner of the surrounding ranch is asking the Operator to put in a new road to the site. I informed the Mr.
Templeton that any new or substantially improved road whose primary purpose it to access the mine, needs to
be included in the permitted area (Rule 6.3.3(g)). The Operator will need to submit a permit amendment
application and get approval prior to beginning construction on the new road.
Two problems were noted during the inspection that will need to be addressed (see page 3)
1. During the inspection we were not able to locate the mine markers on the northwest and southwest
corners (Rule 3.1.12). The comers need to be identified and properly marked,
2. State listed noxious weeds were found on site, including Diffuse Knapweed (Centaurea diffusa) and
Scotch Thistle (Onopordum tauricum)(Rule 3.1.10(6)). The Mr. Templeton stated that the Operator has
an ongoing weed control program. A noxious weed control plan Technical Revision (TR) needs to be
developed, submitted to the Division, and implemented.
Enforcement and Inspection Contact Address
NAME: Albert Templeton
OPERATOR: The Denver Brick Company
STREET: 410 Prairie Hawk Dr.
j CITY/STATE2IP: Castle Rock, CO 80104 ~
cc:
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers CO Hazardous Materials and Waste Division
U.S. Bureau of Land Management CO State Engineers Office
U.S. Forest Service CO Water Quality Control Division
CO Department of Transportation OTHER:
