Fret's current sweeper efforts add sediment to the waterway,
as well as create dust clouds that impair visibility and create
safety risks for east-bound and west-bound traffic on
Highway 6.
Alembers of UCCWA participated in the October 1, 2007 site
visit of the quarry (organized by CDOTj and have had
considerable discussion of these issues at recent UCCWA
meetings, Although the sediment release occurs off-site (in
CDOT right-of-~vay), it ~s obvious that fhe source is Frei s
VJalstrum Quarry, Sediment from the quarry and from trucks
tracking material along US 6 is svdept. washed, or blown
onto CDOT right-of-way. As such, vre request that CDOT
revise the Access Permit for Albert Frei and Sons, Inc. to
require afl effective, sate, and continuous removal of
aggregate debris 2nd sediment from the CDOT right-ot-way.
Sweeping sedimenl to the side of US 6 is not effective;
sediment should be removed and properly disposed before it
reaches Clear Creek.
For the record, If the MMRR Quarry in Gilpin County
is allowed to operate under the current operating and
permitting guidelines, we anticipate an additional 200
to 400 trucks per day. with the potential to significantly
aggravate these same issues.
~^Je appreciate CDOT participating in the site visit at
the quarry and its willingness to consider a variety of
possible solutions to the sediment discharges to
storrn~vater and Clear Creek. We are hopeful that other
regulatory agencies with authority at the Walstrum Quarry
will also participate in efforts to decrease the ofisite impacts
from the site. VJe are certain that the various permitting and
regulatory agencies of the State of Colorado can work
together to promote and enforce a `big picture" perspective
that provides overall environmental, social, and economic
sustainabiliry. We Icok fonvard to seeing a revised CDOT
access permit for the V/alstrum Quarry that ensures effective
removal of sediment and aggregate debris that is currently
being tracked onto CDOT's RO~'J
Respectfully,
"~ :: -.
Dale L~tieP, 2007 UCCV'JA Chair
