Reveaetation
Growth of vegetation continues for the season due to improved moisture over last growing
season. Plant diversity at this site is good, with cool season grasses currently leading the
way. Many of the cool season grasses, such as western wheatgrass and smooth brome, are
beginning to set seed heads. Warm season grasses are showing early growth. Mr. Montoya
expressed some concern about the presence of some of the shrub species, such as pinion
pine and juniper that are present on the reclamation. We inspected some of these plants
and also I identified the valuable species Winterfat. He mentioned he would like to spray the
pinion trees with a herbicide but I suggested that he not do that until final bond release has
been achieved, even though there is no shrub re-establishment standard at this site.
Spraying could be detrimental to other desirable species. Scotch thistle plants occur
sporadically throughout the site and were cut as they were encountered. Cattle were not
observed on the reclaimed area or in the surrounding rangeland.
Overall, the site appeared in good condition for the spring season.
4
