From: Glen Golden
To: MROLLING
Date: 7/17/97 8:15am
Subject: DMG's request for our New Elk findings -Forwarded
Mitch,
Re: Ron's attached a-mail
As I understand my role in the FY 1997 Colorado Oversight review, I am to evaluate the stability
of selected earth fills to determine present stability. I found no evidence of massive impending
failure at the New Elk Mine. Although there are some conditions that could lead to future
problems, I understand that long-term-stability assessments--which would consider potential
effects--are not part of the evaluation agreement with the State. Both fills at the New Elk Mine
aze still being constructed, so the mine operator is addressing superficial instability as it occurs.
Because Ron has determined compliance with the specified inspection criteria, I conclude that,
for the New Elk Mine, the State has met the Oversight evaluation criteria as stated in the formal
Oversight Agreement.
If you like, you may pass this information on to DMG. If you, or anyone else, should have any
questions regazding my findings, please let me know.
CC: RSASSAMA
