(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: nn_te77_~5t
INSPECTION DATE: rlrtnhar 23 vpr17 INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: nay
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine inspection conducted by David Bird of DRMS. Present during the inspection were Mr_ Gregory
Knell, Regulatory Manager, and Mr. Jason McGraw, Mine Supervisor. The site is located in Jefferson County,
approximately 5 miles south-southwest of the intersection of Highway C-470 and South Wadsworth Boulevard,
and within the boundaries of land owned by, and leased from, Lockheed Martin.
Material mined at this site consists of clay from the Benton Formation /Dakota Group, which is ultimately used
to produce bricks. The rock is generally poorly consolidated and easily stripped, but occasional blasting is
needed and is handled by an independent contractor.
The mine had recently completed a "campaign", a period of two to three months during which material is
stripped from the pit and stockpiled on site for later removal and transport to processing facilities for production
of bricks. Thus five new stockpiles of material, averaging approximately 400 ft long by 12-15 ft high and 100 ft
wide, have been placed about the site. Removal of stockpiled material can occur over several years. There
was no mining or movement of material ongoing at the time of inspection.
The site was in good condition. Signs and markers were adequate, and generally not needed since the mine is
surrounded on all sides by Lockheed Martin property, and the likelihood of public access is remote. Storm
water controls appear to be functioning properly, fhe hydrologic balance appears to be unimpacted, and no
erosional issues were evident. Noxious are nearly nonexistent; the surrounding area appears quite amenable to
healthy vegetative growth, and some previously disturbed ground is nearly indistinguishable from native ground
due towell-established grasses.
Because of the newly completed mining campaign and additional areas of disturbance at the site over those
documented during the last Division inspection in 2001, the existing financial warranty of $39,750 is found to be
inadequate. The Division's recalculation puts the new financial warranty at $72,739, an increase of $32,989.
This has been cited as a problem on page 3 of this inspection report.
I & E Contact Address
NAME: Greaorv Knell.
