Revegetation
Western wheatgrass, smooth brome, and cicer milkvetch are responding to warming soil
temperatures and excellent moisture. Warm season grasses like blue grama and sideoats
grama were also noted in significant numbers but have yet to respond due to a cool, wet
spring. Cattle or evidence of grazing were not observed on the reclamation but cattle were
noted in the adjacent rangeland area. The gate to the topsoil pile footprint area remains
open. The operator may want to secure this gate to prevent grazing this season if the
vegetation on the reclamation will be sampled this year. This is the ninth growing season of
the minimum ten-year liability period for revegetation.
A small patch of whitetop was observed 80 feet west of the small explosives magazine on
the southeast portion of the reclaimed area. This weed patch was noted last year. Please
refer to the photo included in the May 2003 inspection for an exact location. Flowers are just
beginning to set and this aggressive weed should be sprayed immediately.
Overall, the site appeared in good condition for the spring season
