i t
Although these welds cover the tears in the liner, they did not completely
seal them due to remaining pinholes. The probable cause was insufficient
heat generated by the welding gun available to COM, Inc.'s crew.
1/16/96 COM, Inc. decided that the best approach was to hire Colorado Lining Co.
to reweld all of the prior welds, and then vacuum test and certify them.
Colorado Lining Co. accepted the engagement and committed to begin
work as soon as weather allowed.
1/17-24/96 COM, Inc. and Colorado Lining Co. stayed in daily contact to schedule the
work as weather allowed. Extrusion welding cannot be done safely during
snow or rain or when wind blows snow across the liner surface to be
welded. These conditions precluded working on 1/17-I8, 1/20-21 and 1/23.
On 1/19, Colorado Lining Co.'s crew was able to weld for about one hour
before snow began to fall and work had to stop. On 1/22, snow began
falling when the crew arrived at the mine and no welding could be done.
On I/24, they were able to work about half a day.
CURRENT STATUS
Colorado Lining Co. has completed and tested 24 welds. Twenty-one
passed vacuum testing. Three failed and will be rewelded and retested.
Colorado Lining Co. estimates that 2-3 days of good weather will be
required to complete the welding and vacuum testing, which will enable
them to deliver a written certification of the repairs. Work is not scheduled
today, I/25, because of poor weather predicted as of late yesterday. Subject
to adverse weather, Colorado Lining Co. is scheduled to resume work on
1 /26.
Colorado Lining Co. has committed to COM, Inc. that its crew will remain
available to work as the weather allows until all repairs and vacuum testing
are completed so that they can issue the independent certification required
by the Board.
