3 • • <br />DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTY NEED CONTROL AREA <br />The weed control area encompasses all of Montezuma County, and is comprised <br />of 1,340,160 total acres or 2094 square miles. The County consists of 69.6% Federal <br />land, .9% State land, 1.8% County and Municipal land, with 27.7% of the land in private <br />ownership. There are ] 070 miles of state and county roads. 820 of these miles are county <br />maintained roads. There are some Federal and Tribal roads not included in this total. <br />Tlie County includes areas of high arid desert, sagebrush rangelands, grazeable <br />woodlands, irrigated pasture and hayland and large areas of dry and irrigated farmlands. <br />Overall elevation within the County ranges from approximately 4,900 feet to over 11,600 <br />feet. Average annual precipitation ranges from approximately 13.5 inches at Cortez to <br />over 28 inches near timberline. Tlie growing season averages approximately 125 days in <br />the agricultural areas, normally extending from May through September with moderately <br />cold winters. <br />STATE1vIENT OF ~VECD PROBLEI`i <br />The weed problem tivitl~in the County is considered significant. The following list <br />of seventeen (17) weeds designated as noxious in Montezuma County and the level of <br />infestation is listed as follows: <br />1. Leafy Spurge - Eupliorbia esula /orr <br />2. Diffuse Knapweed -Centaurea diffusa Iorv <br />3. Russian Knapweed -Centaurea repens very high <br />4. Spotted Knapweed -Centaurea nraculosa lore <br />The following weeds were added to the Montezuma County Noxious weed list by <br />action of the County Commissioners at a public hearine held on I<Iarch 28, 1994, <br />and the weed clan is hereby modified to include those chances. <br />5. Canada Thistle - Cirsium arvense very high <br />6. Musk Thistle -Carduus nutans rc~ry high <br />7. Plumeless Thistle -Carduus acanthoides Iorv <br />8. Scotch Thistle - Onopordum acanthiunt Iorv <br />9. Jointed Goatgrass - Aegilops cylindrica Host lore <br />]0. Purple Loosestrife (Lythrurn} - Lythrunt salicaria gone <br />1 i. Dalmatian Toadflax -Linaria dalmatica /orv <br />12. Yellow Toadflax - Linaria wlgaris Iorv <br />13, Field Bindweed - Convolwlus arvensis high <br />14, Sulphur Cinquefoil - Potenti(la recta narc~ <br />15. Wlritetop (Hoary cress) - Cardaria spp. high <br />] G. Perennial Peppenveed (Tall Whitetop) - Lepidium latifollurn Iorv <br />17. Houndstongue - Cynoglossum officinale Iorv <br />The Montezuma County Weed Conunission tareets the above list of noxious <br />weeds mandated For control within the County: The Weed Commission shall review the <br />control levels of the Mandated Noxious Weeds that are being achieved, and will make <br />recommendations as appropriate. <br />Tlie Weed Commission strongly recommends that all landowners cooperate in <br />managing these noxious weeds with the goal of greatly reducing the infestation and <br />impact of these weed pest in Montezuma County. <br />
