Revegetation
This year's growth of vegetation is drying down due to recent dry and record high
temperatures. The landowners expressed concern about the abundance of weeds at the
site. in particular on the west side of the RDA. Inspection of this area indicated a presence
of weeds such as Russian thistle, Kochia, and sunflowers, but not nearly in the abundance of
last years crop. Litter, stems, and debris from last years growth was readily apparent with
grass plants numerous underneath this cover. Mr. Phillips and Inspector Gorham both
agreed that non-noxious annual weeds are normal in the early years following revegetation
and are even desirable in those early years. Although some patches of Kochia were
observed on the reclaimed area of pond 3. in no case were these areas extensive like last
year.
Mr. Phillips quickly identified a small patch of Russian knapweed immediately west of the
topsoil stockpile at the permanent parking area. This noxious weed is extremely aggressive
and can be difficult to control if not caught early. The plant spreads by black, deep-growing
roots that penetrate to a depth of over eight feet. Due to the close proximity to the topsoil
pile, this weed patch should be treated and monitored for total elimination. The knapweed
plants are easily distinguished from the brown grasses by their healthy, green appearance.
Topsoil pile
~a-~. .
