• •
AGGREGATE
Tom Schreiner INDUSTRIES
May 30, 2002
Page three
9. Offered to pay for cost for drilling deeper well
10. Waiting for outcome of groundwater modeling study to determine
reimbursement for pump
Case well -contacted AI mid May
11. Waiting for outcome of groundwater modeling study to determine
reimbursement or payment of new well and pump
12. Stated to Mr. Case, that if the situation worsened that AI could provide
assistance during the interim period
In addition to the above, the Platte Valley Mine ceased dischazge from one dewatering
pump, in early April, into the South Platte River. As stated in our mitigation efforts, this
water is pumped into the ski lake located east of the plant. The second discharge point
into the river will cease shortly and water will be pumped water into an old, abandoned,
unlined channel of the McHannon Ditch. This will allow water to recharge the area north
of the mine. If during the course of the water modeling study shows no impact to the
area to the north, water to this area will cease and discharge to the river may resume.
To date, Joe Sasaki, who sent the Division a letter, has not contacted Aggregate
Industries about issues with his wells. Aggregate Industries is concerned that because we
are offering to pay for the deepening of certain wells that many more landowners in the
vicinity of the mine will come forward with unwarranted complaints of injury to wells.
We recognize the severity of the drought and its impact in the area and sympathize with
the landowners affected by these conditions. At this time, AI feels it is necessary to
complete a groundwater modeling study to determine future obligations to adjacent
landowners and prevent unwarranted claims against Aggregate Industries. The
groundwater study will take approximately 4-6 weeks for completion.
We hope this provides the Division with the course of action AI has chosen to take.
Please call me at 303-716-5304 if I can provide additional information. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jamie W. Gaboriau
Manager of Environmental Affairs
attachment
