There is a 20-foot access road, blocked by an earthen berm, at the entrance to the upper bench area. There is an
un-reclaimed, but overgrown, access road, approximately a hundred yards long, down from GCR 117 to the
lower bench area. Both roads are unimproved dirt roads.
Describe any backfilling/grading completed by the operator or the Division and year completed;
The Division commenced reclamation of the site in the summer of 1990. Work involved sealing and backfilling
the access portal, demolishing and removing certain mine structures and electrical utilities to the north of GCR
117, and sealing the fan portal south of the road. The air intake adit collapsed behind the portal seal in 1994,
creating a depression at the surface roughly 15 feet in diameter and more than 50 feet deep. The collapse was
reclaimed in the summer of 1994 by AML. Removal of a failing crib wall adjacent to and on the north side of
the road, backfill of the settlement or collapse over the lower fan portal (below the road), cleanup of
miscellaneous equipment and mining debris, and reseeding of re-disturbed azeas was accomplished in October
of 1999 by AML. All funds from the forfeited Sunlight bond have been expended by the State on reclamation
work at the mine.
Is there any remaining backfilling and grading work to be accomplished on site? List area and estimated
volume;
There is no remaining backfilling and grading work to be accomplished on the site.
Are there any signs of settling on any of the reclaimed areas? Have there been settling/stability concerns in the
past? i. e. surface cracks, springs displacement?
A deteriorating crib wall was removed, and collapse behind the lower air portal has been remediated. There is
no current sign of settling on reclaimed areas, and there aze no remaining stability concems.
Was topsoil replaced? If yes what thickness over how many acres? Is there any topsoil remaining in stockpiles?
No topsoil was replaced, and there is not any topsoil remaining in stockpiles.
**Was the site seeded?
Yes, the reclaimed azeas were seeded.
** How many acres seeded?
An estimated 5.24 acres were seeded.
* * When was it seeded?
Initial seeding was accomplished in 1990, and the cribwall site and remedial collapse work seeded in 1994.
**Is the seed mix known?
Yes. The seed mix included Louisiana sage, Palmer Penstemon, Globemallow, Western wheatgrass, Bluebunch
wheatgrass, Sideoats grama, Blue grama, Basin wildrye, Indian ricegrass, Green needlegrass, and Sand
dropseed.
