Describe any areas of rills and gullies noting depths, lengths, frequency and estimates of age of development
and recent erosional activity
Rills approximately 50 feet long and up to six inches deep have developed on the un-reclaimed mine waste pile
above GCR 117. They likely started as soon as the mine waste pile was constructed, and as evidenced by
material at the foot of the slope, continues to this day.
Describe any areas of sediment deposition in ditches, livestock tanks, or ponds
Material eroded off the coal mine waste pile collect in the uphill side road ditch of GCR 117.
Describe whether rainfall or snowmelt (or both) are the primary cause of erosion or sediment transport
The Division has observed no erosion or sediment transport during inspections. Erosion off the coal mine waste
pile likely occurs both from snowmelt and rainfall.
Overall, describe in qualitative terms the general erosion rate(minimal, moderate, excessive)
Overall, the general erosion rate is minimal.
(v) The extent to which the site is located near or above urbanized areas, communities,
occupied dwellings, schools, and other public or commercial buildings and facilities.
Describe the extent and risk associated with the mine site that is located near or above urbanized areas,
communities, occupied dwellings, schools, and other public or commercial buildings and facilities.
The mine site is located upstream from an occupied farm dwelling, across the stream from a new home, and
approximately 0.5 mile below a developed ski area. There is no risk associated with the mine site to these
facilities.
(vi) The extent of reclamation completed prior to abandonment and the degree of stability of reclaimed
and/or unreclaimed areas, taking into consideration the physical characteristics of the land mined and the
extent of settlement or revegetation that has occurred naturally within them.
The site was not reclaimed prior to abandonment. The un-reclaimed and reclaimed sites aze stable. The upper air
shaft appeazed to have settled, but the landowner has constructed a road across it and there has been no
indication of additional settlement. The removal of the deteriorating crib wall and remedial work at the collapse
behind the lower air portal appeaz to have been successful.
Are there any remaining facilities on site? i.e. buildings, culverts, upland diversions, mine debris... List location
construction material, condition and dimensions of structures;
There is a culvert (metal) under GCR 117 to convey runoff from the upper bench area to the sedimentation
pond. This culvert also acts as a road ditch culvert. It is in good repair. There is an upland diversion above the
portal areas. This earthen ditch is in good repair.
Are there any remaining roads on site? Were they approved to remain on site? List roads including length and
condition;
