- The background surface and ground water in the area of the mine is relatively
saline. Following are the results of some of Peabody"s surface and ground water
self-monitoring for Specific Conductance:
Upstream from the NPDES
discharge pt. - site #70
6/13/91-1020 umhos/cm
64 gpm
7/11/91- 990 umhos/cm
1200 umhos/cm
@ 119 gpm
1300 umhos/cm
Mine pond discharge
site #006
no discharge
1020 umhos/cm
Samples from alluvial well # WB0100 have shown Specific Conductivity as follows:
11/04/87 - 1730 umhos/cm
05/31/88 - 2480
08/16/88 - 2410 "
08/23/90 - 2630
06/11/91 - 1860 umhos/cm from lab. test, 1720 umhos/cm field test. Some of the
earlier samples were not temperature corrrected to 258C.
The specific conductance of the ground water wells and the discharges from the
mine should continue to be monitored by the MLRD for long term trends.
Field Inspection
The inspection started on the Tie Across Haul Road (TAH) with review of the
culverts, bar ditches, side slopes, etc. The following culverts were blocked or
partially blacked and were cleaned during the inspection: TAHC-10 b 18, and the
oil well access road. Bar ditch q TAHD-9 had eroded to 1"deev x 3'wide x 75' rn
length, and was repaired and rip-rapped during the inspection.
The inspection of the mine site included a review of the entire perimeter of the
disturbed area on toot and in vehicles. The above noted participants also viewed
the undisturbed permit area. Problems noted on the mine site included 2 topsoil
protection issues.
(7) The fuel oil tank berm was constructed of what looked to he topsoil.
(2) The explosives pad berm was graded over topsoil that had not yet been
removed.
In both cases the topsoil resource was salvaged during the inspection.
Also, a drainage was blocked with approximately 4' of soil on the north side of
the active pit. Again, the permittee corrected the problem before the end of the
day.
Downstream ftom the NPDES
discharge pt. - site #66
No entorcement actions were taken by OSM or MLRD.
