Mr, Westley Potts and Mr. Jim
Potts accompanied the DMG inspector through out this inspection. The mine site is located approximately 10 miles east of Mancos,
on the north slope of Caviness Mountain, in Twin Canyon Basin, on a jeep trail at approximately 9400' elevation, in Section 14,
T36N, R72W, of Montezuma County. On 5/12/92, DMG approved conversion of the original 110(2) permit to a 11011) permit.
Total affected area is stated in the permit to be 0.75 acres. DMG holds financial warranty in the form of a certification of deposit
with the Mancos Valley Benk for 51000.00.
Public access to the mine site was discouraged by locked chain across the road approximately 0.5 miles from the mine site.
Mine access road was well maintained. Mine identification sign and permit perimeter markers were not evident.
The surface disturbance exists entirely on the historic road cut constructed for mine access or from logging operations. The operator
indicated that the Charlene Tunnel existed in the 1930's. Topsoil had not been salvaged during road construction and since the
surface disturbance has been limited to the old road surface, no topsoil has been salvaged by this operation.
The cut slope above the tunnel entrance was estimated at 2H:1 V slope, and extended approximately 60' upslope. The cut slope
appeared stable, no evidence of sliding, slumping or sloughing was found. Native vegetation has invaded the cut slope, aspen trees,
wild rose, various grasses, (orbs, and annuals were established on the steep slope.
The affected area at the tunnel entrance appeared to be approximately 0.3 acres in size. A truck mounted air compressor was
parked at the tunnel entrance, hoses extended from the compressor into the tunnel. Tunnel entrance was dry, no drainage was
noted. Tunnel entrance was supported with timbers. Also located et the tunnel entrance was a portable gasoline engine, wood
framed shack 10' x 10', and ore stockpile containing approximately 200 cubic yards of material. Ore material appeared to be from
e sandstone strata, no pyritic material was observed in the ore. No chemicals or acid Torming materials were found on site.
The operator stated that ore is extracted from the Charlene Tunnel (historic name of the Twin Canyon Minel and milled using gravity
processes at his residence located south of Mancos. The processing operation was not inspected.
A small cabin was located 0.25 mile down slope from the permit area. The operator indicated that the cabin was built prior to
permit issuance as a summer residence for his parents. The cabin was well maintained, roof, doors and windows were intact. The
cabin is not located within the effected area, is not listed within the permit and was established prior to the conditions of this permit,
as such DMG does not consider the cabin to be associated with this permit.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Westlev Potts
OPERATOR Potco Mining end Milling
STREET 8115 County Road 41
CITYISTATE2IP Mancos, CO 81328
cc: Tom Gillis, DMG
^ CE
^ BL
^ FS
^ HW
^ HMWMD (CHI
^ SE
^ WOCD (CHI
^ OTHER
