(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1980-203
INSPECTION DATE: 8-22-06
OBSERVATIONS
INSPECTOR'S INITIALS GRM
This inspection was conducted as part of the normal monitoring program established by the Colorado Division of
Reclamation, Mining and Safety for permitted sites. The Division attempted to contact the operator prior to the
inspection but did not receive a response to a telephone message. The Currier Pit is a 110(c) permitted site located
in eastern Mesa County on 71.4 Road. The site has intermittent status.
The inspector did not see a sign posted at the entrance to the mine site. Additionally, only 2 boundary markers were
found along the western edge of the permit boundaries. The annual report states the markers are located annually;
however, they must be clearly visible. The inspector walked the northern and eastern edges and could not find
clearly defined markers along the permit boundaries. It appears that all activities are well within the approved
permit boundaries; however the inspector can not say so with 100% assurance. Therefore, the mine identification
sign and affected area boundary markers were not observed and must be installed per the requirements of Rule
3.1.12 that state:
1) The operator shall post a sign at the entrance to the mine site which shall be clearly visible from the access road
and specify the following:
a) The name of the operator;
b) indicate that a reclamation permit for the operation has been issued by the Colorado Mined Land
Reclamation Board;
c) the permit number.
2) The boundaries of the affected area will be marked by monuments or other markers that are clearly visible and
adequate to delineate such boundaries.
The lack of an identification sign and boundary markers is noted as a problem with the corrective action(s) and
correction date specified on the last page of this report.
The site is in an active mining phase. The inspector notes that there are several stockpiles ofprocessed materials and
a loader on site. Recent activities have developed small highwalls along the eastern edge with heights of
approximately ] 0 to 15 feet.
Stormwater management appears to contain precipitation on site. No evidence of sedimentation or erosion problems
were observed.
As noted in the last inspection, thistle was observed in multiple areas of the pit. The annual report states that the
weeds are sprayed, but the inspector did not find evidence of spraying such as dead or distressed plants. The
infestation, ifnot controlled, will most likely hinder and/or delay successful reclamation ofthis site and contribute to
off-site spreading and establishment of these weeds. A weed control plan developed in consultation with, and
approved by, the appropriate local weed control authority must be submitted as a technical revision to this permit.
Weed infestation is noted as a problem, with the corrective action(s) and correction date specified on the last ap ~e of
this report. Significant progress toward control of on-site weeds must be demonstrated within three years to avoid
potential Board action. A copy of this report will be sent to the appropriate weed control authority for this area.
