Fish and Wildlife
Trout were observed surfacing in the Purgatoire River immediately below the culverts under
the mine entrance road. Elk appear to be using the reclaimed area during the night to graze
sprouting grasses that are beginning to emerge. This site has no negative impact on the
wildlife that live in this area.
Reveaetation
Grasses are just beginning the growing season due to sudden and much needed moisture.
Sprouting is limited though, likely due to lingering cool soil temperatures. As the soil profile
warms, the site should have burst of growth unlike any of the past 4-5 years. Weeds have
been only a minor problem, mostly Canada thistle and Scotch thistle. However, with
abundant moisture, these two species will likely appear more abundant unlike previous
years. The operator should ensure that weed-spraying activities are conducted in a timely
and appropriate fashion for maximum effect.
Soil Methane Area
Existing soil methane monitors were checked for integrity. Caps were replaced on a few of
the monitors, likely knocked off due to cattle or elk interference. One monitor in front of the
Toupal residence was found knocked over and was not replaced or repaired. Contaminated
areas show no obvious sign of natural recovery at this time. The operator should ensure that
annual soil methane monitoring is conducted in 2004 as verbally agreed with the DMG.
The site appeared normal for the spring season and in excellent condition.
