Mr. Steve Shuey
Re: Information Inquiries
Reports indicate that no further work was done under this Permit and that the mines
remained on standby.
I was not able to locate any information that indicates that mining disturbance took place
under the Monogram Mines Permit (M-1978-222) and the Monogram-Jo Dandy Permit
(M-1977-293), other than the drilling of the vent hole at the Bull Durham as noted above.
2. Conversation with Tony Bates (Umetco).
I spoke with Tony on Tuesday, September 16. Tony indicated that he did not get
involved with the mines on the Monogram Mesa, and that Frank Barnett took care of the
reclamation and permit matters for this azea. As you know, Frank is doing surveying
work for IUSA, and I have also quizzed him as to his recollections regazding past work
and which exact sites were included under the Permits. Frank has no specific
recollections that shed any new light on our questions, other than he is certain that the
open portal at Canopus would not have been left by Umetco when they did work on the
site; he therefore thinks this portal must not have been Umetco's, but he can offer no
specific confirmation.
Tony did have specific recollection of the vent hole at Bull Durham. He stated with
certainty that the hole has been plugged and all reclamation has been completed. He
stated that there is no building and concrete pad left.
Conversation with Lynn Lewis (BLM).
I spoke with Ms. Lewis on Wednesday, September 17. She also had no specific
recollections about most of the Monogram Mesa sites. This is not too surprising, as most
of the sites (at least the ones on ground now held by IUSA) aze on patented land.
Ms. Lewis did have specific recollection about the vent hole at Bull Durham. She does
not know how it ended up under the Monogram-Jo Dandy Permit, but she knows it was
drilled, and she thought it was subsequently reclaimed. She also indicated very
specifically that a "framework" remains at the site and that there is also a partially buried
water tank at the mine site. She did not have any idea whether or not these two items are
under Permit M-1977-293.
I was not able to add much to what we have already deduced for the two Permits in questions. I
am certainly ready to discuss these Permits with you further if I can be of any help in your
preparation of your Inspection Report. I will, however, be out of the office for the entire week of
September 22.
Sin~ce~rel/y, `~~~
/~
Terry V.
