5. Slope Design and Stability
The Colorado Division of Reclamation,Mining, and Safety(CDRMS) mandates specific regulations to ensure the safety
and environmental integrity of non-coal mining operations across the state. These guidelines, which include the widely
accepted 2:1 slope ratio (horizontal to vertical),are designed to prevent slope failures that could jeopardize human safety
and cause environmental damage. The CDRMS's comprehensive regulations also encompass engineering and safety mea-
sures such as benching and terracing, adequate drainage systems to mitigate slope instability, regular site inspections, and
detailed compliance documentation. These measures are essential for maintaining slope stability and ensuring the well-be-
ing of both the environment and mine workers. dust, managing noise levels, and ensuring that all workers have access to
necessary personal protective equipment.
5.1 Slope Ratio and Design
The recommended slope ratio for the project is 2:1 (horizontal to vertical),as it offers both stability and economic efficien-
cy in excavation, particularly suited to Colorado's soil conditions. Geotechnical assessments will guide the slope design,
taking into account soil particle size, cohesion, and moisture content to ensure structural integrity and prevent slope fail-
ure.
5.2 Legal and Regulatory Compliance
The West Side Placer Project will adhere to state and federal regulations to maintain safe and compliant mining practices.
These guidelines, established by the Colorado Division of Reclamation,Mining, and Safety, mandate specific slope angles
and other safety measures to protect both the environment and workers.Additionally,industry-standard safety codes will
be integrated, outlining engineering practices such as benching and terracing to enhance slope stability throughout mining
operations.
• State Regulations:Adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Colorado Division of Reclamation,Mining, and Safety,
which mandate specific slope angles and other safety measures to ensure compliance and safeguard the environment
and workers.
• Safety Codes: Incorporation of state and federal safety codes that specify engineering practices such as benching and
terracing to stabilize slopes during mining operations.
5.3 Implementation Techniques
The slope design for the West Side Placer Project follows the CDRMS guidelines, with a standard slope ratio of 2:1 (hori-
zontal to vertical)in general excavation areas and a steeper 1.5:1 ratio for deep pit excavations,as permitted under Rule 6.5.
Engineering techniques such as benching and terracing are implemented in accordance with Rule 3.1 to enhance stability
and manage surface runoff. These measures comply with the geotechnical stability standards required by Rule 6.5,ensuring
the structural integrity of all excavated areas.
• Benching and Terracing:These methods will be employed to enhance slope stability, manage erosion, and control
surface runoff effectively.
• Drainage Control: Designing and implementing comprehensive drainage solutions to manage water flow, prevent
7
HARDROCK/METAL MINING REGULAR(112)APPLICATION Au Pt Industries LLC I PO Box 1424-Edwards,Colorado 81632 1970 306 1 784
