A drill rate is given as it is the starting basis for the
broadcast method of application but the seed will be broadcast..
Seed Application Method (iv)
Seed will be broadcast and pressed into the soil with the available equipment. For
example: if a dozer is on site, the dozer can "walk" the seeded area, pressing the seed
into the soil. Other methods can be a light drag, a roller, an ATV, or similar equipment.
Seed to soil contact and a firm seed bed enhance germination of most species. A note
of caution: seed should not be pressed too deeply into the soil. Most grass seed
requires a depth of 0.25-0.5 inches for proper germination and deeper placement
reduces success.
Forage kochia should not be pressed into the soil. Hence, after all other seeding and
pressing of the seed into the soil is done, the forage kochia is to be broadcast. Timing is
critical with forage kochia, with late fall to late winter being the best period (late
November- late February). It is acceptable to broadcast on upwards of 6 inches of snow
or frozen ground. Forage kochia is normally harvested in late November and after the
first hard frost; the fresh seed generally has the highest success in establishing a stand
of forage kochia. Old or improperly stored forage kochia seed can have a very poor
germination rate, at times well under 50 percent.
The timing of the seeding is important, with a late fall to very early spring seeding
having the best germination and survival for most grass species in the mix, considering
the pits geographical location and climate. Timing of seeding is limited due to the
requirements forage kochia.
D8
