October 4, 2023 C-1996-083/Bowie No. 2 Mine RDZ

Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 3
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1

PROCESSING WASTE/COAL MINE WASTE PILES – Rule 4.10 and 4.11
Drainage Control; Surface Stabilization; Placement:
Gob Piles 1, 2, 3, and 4 appeared stable. Some rills are on the upper slope of Gob Pile #2 but appeared no worse
than in recent months. The ditches on the flat, un-reclaimed portion of Gob Pile #2 appear to be functioning well.

Gob Pile #3 appeared stable, and no significant amount of sediment has been transported into the ditch below (per
observation during the inspection). The ditch, D-J3, appeared to be functioning well.

ROADS – Rule 4.03
Construction 4.03.1(3)/4.03.2(3), Drainage 4.03.1(4)/4.03.2(4), Surfacing and Maintenance4.03.1(5) and
(6)/4.03.2(5) and (6), Reclamation 4.03.1(7)/4.03.2(7):
The road to the portals was in adequate condition. The majority of slopes adjacent to this road were stable, with
the exception of the slide above Curve 10.

REVEGETATION – Rule 4.15
Vegetative Cover; Timing:
Some issues with weeds were observed: Many halogeton plants were seen on Gob Pile #2. Large amounts of
cheat grass were seen above Pond F. Some white top plants were seen at the Utility Bench. Large thistle plants
were seen along the diversion ditch above Gob Pile #2, but they appear to have been treated with herbicide.

SLIDES and DAMAGE - Rule 4.12:
It appears that slumps above Curve Number 6 along the Haul Road, above the B Portal bench, above Curve
Number 11, and above the D Portal bench have not moved significantly in recent months.

The slide above Curve Number 10 is an ongoing problem, and BRL staff are working to protect it from further
damage during the winter. They are installing a culvert at the toe of the hill and will place soil and large boulders
over the culvert.
