Red Creek Quarry Baseline Water Investigation Section 4

4-2
DRAFT for review purposes only. Use of contents on this sheet is subject to the limitations specified at the end of this document.
4.2 Groundwater Well Purging and Field Parameters
Monitoring wells are purged prior to sample collection per methodology outlined in the Sampling and
Analysis Plan ([SAP]. BC 2023a, Appendix 3.6) and applicable standard operating procedure (SOPs).
Water quality field parameters monitored included pH, specific conductance (SC), dissolved oxygen
(DO), oxidation reduction potential (ORP), temperature, and turbidity. Water quality field instruments
were rented from and pre-calibrated by Pine Environmental. Field instruments were calibrated again
if used after the first day.
During the 3Q 2022 sampling event, purging was conducted using low-flow techniques (micro-
purging) with pneumatic bladder pumps (Photo 4-1) at a rate of approximately 100 milliters per
minute for Well 1, Well 3, and Well 4. The water level in each well was monitored to evaluate the
drawdown during the low-flow purging. Low-flow sampling methods were not used after the first
sampling event (3Q 2023) due to slow groundwater recharge rates and prolonged purging times to
reach stable water quality parameters.
Quarterly sampling for the remaining four sampling events utilized bailers to purge the groundwater
wells (Photo 4-2). The wells were bailed to remove as much water as practical then allowed to
recharge overnight prior to sample collection. The water level was measured prior to purging and at
the conclusion of purging using an electronic water level probe to verify the removal of stagnant
water within the wells prior to sampling (Photo 4-3). Sampling was conducted within 24 hours using
a bailer. Bailers were disposed of at the end of each sampling event.

Photo 4-1. Example of the low-flow purging methods used in 3Q 2022 sampling events
