PMY() l
• Using the same hand trowel or spoon, scrape additional material off of the sidewall, at the
appropriate depth, into a decontaminated sieve (if larger particles are to be screened out), or
directly into the laboratory provided sample container (if screening is not required). Soil that
falls through the sieve should be caught in a decontaminated stainless-steel bowl. Laboratory
provided sample containers should then be filled out of the stainless-steel bowl. Minimize the
amount of time the soil is exposed to atmospheric conditions, and seal inside the sample
containers as soon as practical.
• Label sample containers and place in cold storage. All samples should be chilled to and
maintained at 4° C until delivered to the laboratory. Enter the sample into the chain of
custody, or other field data validation form, such as the soil sampling form or field book, if
compositing with other samples at the laboratory is to be conducted. All spaces on the field
forms should be completed and if not applicable, NA should written into those spaces.
• Once all depth appropriate samples are collected, packaged, labeled, and properly stored,
direct the excavator operator to backfill the test pit using soils generated during its excavation.
8. Do not enter any pit or trench deeper than three feet. A hand auger with extensions may be required in
some cases. In situations where test pit depths exceed 3 feet, soil samples may be collected from the
excavator bucket; however, care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of the sample
location, not sluff, and that the sample is not compromised with material from other vertical intervals.
9. If sampling for volatiles or other potential contaminants where use of a photoionization detector is
appropriate, place a small portion of the soil sample into a"Zip-IockTM" bag and seal the bag immediately.
Screen the soil with the photoionization detector or designated field screening instrument, after a few
minutes, allowing the sample to equilibrate with the headspace inside the baggie.
10. To prevent volatilization, care should be taken to minimize soil exposure to air and heat and to minimize
disturbance of the soil. The soil should completely fill the sampling jar with no headspace room, especially
if analyzing for volatile organic compounds.
Soil Sampling with Excavator or Backhoe
December 23, 2022
