Limited-Results Cultural Resource Survey Form
(page 3 of 3)
V. LITERATURE REVIEW (continued)
25. Known Cultural Resources
In the project area: Prehistoric isolate 5MF.1146, three pieces of debitage, collected, and not eligible was
recorded within the area on Figure 1 in 1980.
In the general region: Numerous previously recorded cultural resources are located within a mile of the study
areas (see Tables 3 and 4, attached).
26. Expected Results: Due to the heavy vegetation cover expectations for prehistoric and historic resources were
considered low.
VI. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
27. The purpose of the study was to identify and record all cultural remains over 50 years old within the area of
potential impact, to assess their significance and eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP),
and make recommendations concerning management. If possible, the remains will add to our understanding
of the prehistory and history of the region.
VII. FIELD METHODS
28. Definitions: Site: A site is the locus of previous human activity (50 year minimum) at which the
preponderance of evidence suggests either a one-time use or repeated use overtime, or multiple classes of
activities. For example: a) Isolated thermal features such as hearths are to be designated as sites, due to the
interpretable function of such utilization and the potential for chronometric and economic data of recovery, b)
Single element rock art panels are to be designated as sites due to the interpretable nature of such an event and
the potential diagnostic value of the motif, c) Similarly, isolated human burials are to be designated as sites, or
d) Loci exhibiting ground stone and flake stone in association. IF: An isolate refers to one or more culturally
modified objects not found in the context of a site as defined above. Note that this definition makes no reference
to an absolute quantitative standard for the site/isolate distinction. For example: a) A discrete concentration
of flakes from the same material regardless of the number of artifacts present likely represents a single, random
event and is properly designated as in isolate, or b) Similarly, a ceramic pot bust is to be recorded as an isolate,
regardless of the number of sherds that remain.
29. Describe Survey Method: A 100 percent pedestrian cultural resources survey of the three areas totaling103
acres was made by two archaeologists walking a series of parallel transects spaced at 15-meter intervals. The
survey was limited by heavy, thick ground cover and previous surface disturbance.
VIII. RESULTS
30. List IFs if applicable. Indicate IF locations on the map completed for Part III.
A. Smithsonian Number: 5MF.11087 Description: Mano
31. Using your professional knowledge of the region, why are there none or very limited cultural
remains in the project area? Is there subsurface potential?
Heavy, thick Transitional Zone brush and prior brush removal of portions of the area on Figure 1 limited the
inventory. Likewise, prior agricultural ground disturbing activities limited the inventory in the areas on Figure
2. Additionally, the entire area in Figure 1 slopes to the north and is north facing. There is no apparent subsurface
potential for the presence of cultural resources. No further work is recommended.
Reference:
USDA NRCS
2023 Moffat County Area, Colorado (CO686). Electronic source, www.websoilsurvey.sc.egov.usda.gov accessed
April 27, 2023
