Colorado Division roject of Reclamation,
Mining & Safety
Alaska Basin Maintenance & Forfeiture Project
San Juan County, CO
Maintenance and Forfeiture
Project 2009
- Y
•
,i vAr
` k 4 • - y 3 fit
•
•
'443"
Alalcsa Basin Site 40—Post 1977 shaft prior to backfill closure
The Alaska Basin Maintenance and Forfeiture Project was the third and fmal project in Alaska Basin. Two previous projects worked on
the closures in the basin, the Maid of the Mist 2004 Project and the Alaska Basin 2006 Project. Both of the previous projects
encountered problems due to early snow and early winter shut-downs. In 2006,the Alaska Basin contractor attempted to close mine
opening 38,but found the site to be significantly larger, after the adit collapsed and opened into a stope. Mine openings 41a and 41b
also needed additional backfill because of settling, most likely from the two on-site school buses buried in the stopes. The 2009 project
also addressed post 1977 mining activity at the number 40 shaft, and the number 39 waste piles located in an active stream channel.
Alaska Basin Maintenance and Forfeiture construction started in late August 2009
and proceeded into mid-September 2009. Site 40 was changed from a grate to Construction Contractor
backfill during construction because site conditions were more suitable to backfill K&P Property Design
due to unconsolidated bedrock and mine waste at the surface. Site 40 should be 236 S.3rd#219
monitored for settling of the backfill. Snow remained on site 38 well into late Montrose,CO 81401
August. As a result, site 38 had to be shoveled out in order to install polyurethane
foam. Site 38 should be monitored frequently due to the unstable and collapsing Project Cost: $11,680.00
nature of this site. Sits 41a and 4 lb received additional fill, but may continue to
subside due to the large school buses located inside the stopes. These may cause DBMS Project Manager
some settling to occur in the future. Mine waste at site 39 was moved away from Kirstin Brown,303.866.3567
the creek and placed against the slope and adjacent to the number 39 adit backfill.
Colorado Division of Reclamation,Mining,&Safety
