r
Closeout Report
Clay County Mine
M-80-076
Reclamation at the Clay County Mine was limited to safeguarding one airshaft. Prior to
the reclamation activities, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment
had directed the capping of the mill tailings on the north side of Lake Gulch. The main
entry to the mine was adequately secured with a locked grate. The buildings remaining
on the property were and are in active use by the owners.
The airshaft that was safeguarded is located north of the main entry across Lake
Gulch. The shaft is on the west side of the tailings reclamation area. The shaft was
safeguarded by excavating to bedrock, placing 3 E-1 reinforced concrete panels (5' x
14' x 7") over the shaft, then placing two six foot long, five foot diameter concrete pipes
over the panels, and backfilling. One of the E-1 panels included a hinged 2' x 2' grate.
A steel grate was then placed on the top of the concrete pipe. Copies of the bidding
documents are attached.
The reclamation work was completed by Ramstetter Excavating, 1120 Secrest, Golden,
Colorado and Dirt-n-Iron, Inc., 1685 17 Road, Loma, Colorado. The airshaft was
capped by Ramstetter Excavating in October of 1997, and Dirt-n-Iron placed a steel
grate over the top of the concrete pipe in June, 1998. The only remaining problem left
on the site is an open airshaft to the south of the main inclined entry. However, there is
insufficient money remaining from the reclamation bond to start this project. The cost
of grating alone will be more than the remaining funds.
Jim Herron
2-2-99
