Colorado Inactive Mine Reclamation Program
CLOSEOUT REPORT
ACTIVE MINE BOND FORFEITURE PROJECTS
Permit Information
Permit Number Operator Name Mine Name
P-1983-079 Jerald W Keifer Fortune Tunnel
Type of Mine—Underground/Prospecting Operation Commodity Mined-Gold
PRE-RECLAMATION SITE CONDITIONS
The Fortune Tunnel is located approximately 4.2 miles west of Boulder, Colorado, in Boulder County. The site is situated off
Magnolia Road (County Road 132), and access is through a private driveway at 1865 Magnolia Drive. A prospecting permit
was issued in 1983 to drift a tunnel along the vein system an estimated 220-280 feet to reach the Fortune Vein. The Tunnel
opening is situated on the New Year Claim, Survey No. 14011. The tunnel opening is approximately 8 feet wide by 10 feet
high, and standing water was observed within the first 100 feet of the mine. The tunnel is partially collapsed. The
reclamation plan states that the tunnel will be backfilled to the approximate natural contour. Prior to reclamation of the site,
the Division consulted with the Division of Wildlife (DOW) regarding potential bat habitat in the tunnel. A bat survey was
conducted in October, 2008 which indicated little potential for this mine to provide significant bat roosting habitat. Therefore,
a bat gate for this site was not recommended by the DOW. The DOW indicated that the best time for the closure work was
the late fall/early winter period.
BIDDING/CONSTRUCTION INFORMATION
Type of Bid Documented Quote Direct Bill P
(circle one) Formal - Bid as the Project, PKA-M-983-079
Direct Bill Number Contractor Name &Address Construction Bond Amount
P-1983-079 Dates $ 1,900.00
Berry Trucking and Excavating, Start: 11/26/2008
Inc.
Direct Bill Date 8561 So. The site
was accessed through 1865 Magnolia Drive with the cooperation of the landowner (Thomas Day). A 6"drain pipe was
installed into the tunnel to a distance of 25 feet and extended out tunnel opening for a distance of 50 feet. A small trench
was cut to allow the drain pipe and was covered with 6" of compacted material prior to backfilling. The pipe was routed
towards the south to allow any water to drain into the adjacent tributary. Backfilling of the Fortune Tunnel involved using on
site material which consisted of a mixture of rock and fill generated from development of the tunnel. The backhoe pushed
material back into the tunnel for a distance of 15 feet from the opening of the tunnel. The final backfilling of the Fortune
Tunnel achieved a slope of approximately 3H:1V. The outermost layer of backfill consisted of suitable plant growth medium
from the surrounding area and was left in a rough state to encourage vegetation establishment. The site was hand seeded
with the Ponderosa Pine/Spruce Fir seed mix provided by the DRMS and the area was fertilized. The access road leading to
the site was also seeded and fertilized.
Remaining Reclamation Requirements and Estimated Cost- None
,(Agetvl
Project Manager Senior Project Manager
121i, OS 16- De-C- 08
Date Date
